Educational Projects

Following are some of the educational projects on which our firm's principal, Richard Behr, has worked. For additional information about any of these projects, please contact us.

  • The Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies (CMPS) (New York City)
The CMPS project involved the renovation of five floors of a mixed-use landmark brownstone building in the Greenwich Village historic district of New York City. The cellar level of the building was lowered, providing approximately 3,500 additional square feet of usable space. A landscaped garden courtyard was created outside of the waiting room at the building's lower level. The upper floors were completely renovated as classrooms and administrative offices. New egress stairs and a new elevator were added, and the facade and windows of the building were restored. (more about this project)

  • Greenwich School System (Greenwich, Connecticut)
Full architectural services were provided for the rehabilitation of 15 schools in the Greenwich school system — 11 elementary schools, 3 junior high schools, and 1 high school. This program, at a total cost of more than $8,000,000, included modernization, energy conservation, new media centers, code work, and other general construction. All schools were occupied during the construction, thereby requiring careful sequencing of work to avoid disrupting the functioning of the schools.

  • The Margaret Chapman School (Hawthorne, New York)
The Margaret Chapman School provides special education for school-aged children, as well as on-campus residence housing for mentally disabled adults. This project involved a complete code review of the entire campus, master planning of a new campus, design of a new daycare center, site plan approval, budget analysis, and renovation of the main school and administrative offices. The structural and HVAC systems were upgraded, and the concrete block building was sheathed in rigid board insulation to increase its energy efficiency. In addition, we worked with the Hawthorne Fire Department to integrate a campus-wide fire access system.

  • The Mead School (Greenwich, Connecticut)
This project involved the adaptive reuse of an old factory building into an elementary school for grades pre-K through 8. As a result of limited budgets, existing structural and mechanical elements and high spaces were utilized to create visual interest. Although basically an open floor plan, private spaces were incorporated as forms within the overall space. Throughout the complete architectural process, an intensive dialogue was maintained with the school directors to ensure the proper integration of physical design with educational philosophy. The Mead School has received several design awards, has been published in several professional journals, and has been cited by various educators as a unique and outstanding project.

  • Stamford School System (Stamford, Connecticut)
This was a comprehensive study and evaluation of the physical facilities of the entire Stamford school system (23 schools). This study interfaced with a study of alternative learning and teaching styles and their relationship to physical space.

  • Tots and Toddlers Child Care (Armonk, New York)

Currently in the planning stages, Tots and Toddlers Child Care is a daycare center for approximately 300 children. With a construction budget of $3,700,000, the center will feature generous amenities including: a large, rural, wooded, and private lot; exposed timber frame construction; 25,000 square feet of daycare space; an interior swimming pool, and an exterior fish pond, with viewing windows from the interior of the daycare. The site of this project — Armonk, New York — has one of the greatest concentrations of Fortune 500 Companies in the world. Tots and Toddlers is currently operating in downtown Armonk and eagerly awaits this much-needed expansion. Construction of this project is expected to begin in July of 2001, enabling occupancy in May or June of 2002. This project is sponsored by IBM, MBIA, and Tots and Toddlers. (more about this project)
